Christmas Carol Service of Remembrance

This year were are holding a Christmas Carol Service of Remembrance on Sunday 14th December 2014 at 3.00pm at St Andrew’s Parish Church, Biggleswade.  The congregation will be invited to light floating candles during the service to remember people they have lost. Tags of Remembrance will also be placed on the Christmas Tree during the service, after the service the tags will be transferred to the Tree of Remembrance at Woodman and Son. After the service all are warmly invited to stay for light refreshments and a chance to share memories. We hope this service will bring comfort to everyone who attends. This invite extends to all in the community.

An Industry first as RUMM employs a Low Carbon Psychologist

Phil Griffiths (pictured 2nd from left) has joined RUMM following the completion of his research on Low Carbon Behaviour with the University of South Wales.

RUMM Energy Management Services was the first company to measure how much energy can be saved through “non-technical” or “behaviour” measures in an industrial or commercial setting. It came as a shock to a technology focussed business that non-technical savings were usually greater than technical savings. It became apparent that this area needed to be understood to minimise energy savings in the workplace and led to the sponsoring of research projects into Behavioural Science at the University of South Wales.

Phil’s research included a behavioural intervention at the Trostre works of TATA Steel which achieved a controlled and significant improvement in energy performance resulting in substantial financial savings and reduced carbon emissions.

We believe that Phil is the first Low Carbon Psychologist appointment anywhere – which is perhaps appropriate as we believe RUMM is the first company to isolate and measure the magnitude of behavioural savings due to accurate metering technology and IBASS software as a means of measuring outcomes. This is an appointment which can help deliver more energy savings for RUMM’s current and future customers.

Although one cannot realistically ‘bully-proof’ a child one can certainly reduce the likelihood of a child being bullied or bullying others at school. Here are ten suggestions – expanded in a book, with research evidence.

1. From the earliest days of child’s life do what you can to ensure he or she feels securely attached to a care-giver. Insecurity and severe anxiety during infancy can affect the capacity of a child to relate confidently to peers at school in later years.
2. Be cautious about the choice and use of childcare centres. Overuse at too early an age of sub-standard centres can be psychological harmful to some children and affect their ability later on to relate to other children at school.
3. Practice an authoritative and supportive style of parenting, recognizing that as the child grows older he or she will require more opportunities to act independently.
4. Avoid an authoritarian, cold, over-controlling way of relating to your child. It can result in children behaving aggressively towards their peers at school.
5. Don’t act as a bully yourself. Your child may copy you.
6. Don’t be over-permissive either. Children need to know where there are boundaries to what they may do.
7. Don’t be over-protective, limiting too much the experiences your child can learn from. Overprotection can lead to a child being bullied.
8. Acknowledge the positive things your child does. This will make it easier for the child to be self-accepting, more resilient and less affected by any bullying.
9. Promote empathic concern for others through your own behaviour. This can help children to be more accepting of others – and more inclined to cooperate and less inclined to bully.
10. Teach (and practice) the golden rule: ‘Do unto others as you would they do unto you
