An Artist Impression
of the scheme

The Project
Torrs Hydro New Mills Limited was established for the specific
purpose of owning the Torrs Hydro Electric scheme by Torr Weir on the
River Goyt in New Mills in the High Peak of Derbyshire. A share of the
revenue from the scheme will help Torrs Hydro achieve its aim to help
regenerate the community and to promote the environmental sustainability
of the New Mills area.
The project was started in 2006 by
Water
Power Enterprises, a social enterprise whose mission is to set up
small-scale hydro plants and reduce carbon emissions. They helped us
start up, apply for grant funding and project managed the building
phase.
We believe we are the first community funded hydro electric scheme in
the UK.
More details on who we are
Until 31st March 2009 Torrs Hydro are offering another chance to buy shares in this ground breaking project. This is a limited offer so if you are interested please contact the secretary.

The next step
The scheme is now up and running. The civil engineering
was done by Western
Renewable Energy managed for us by Water Power Enterprises. We still have some finishing
touches to complete the site and we are working on
these. Meanwhile, the screw is generating
renewable electricity. See our progress on the

"Harness the Flow" article published in The Guardian on Wednesday 25th March 2009 featuring Torrs Hydro.
In a very positive article, The Guardian suggests that "Small scale schemes like Archie are probably the most efficient way to generate electricity." From 2010 the introduction of a feed-in tariff, as used in Germany to successfully kick-start small scale renewable generation, "will reward [small generators] far more generously than the current regime and Torrs Hydro's income could rise four-fold."
